It's a throwback to being a "captive."

When writing proposals as an employee of an IT organization, one always
puts in the model numbers.

Yeah, I'm with you on the "who wants an unethical client anyway" thinking.
The risk of being chumped in that way is part of this way of doing
business, then.

I am familiar with the practice of keeping my side of the street clean and
letting the other guy worry about his. :-)
